Habitat was grouped from map sources that were classified with detailed information on specific sagebrush types, as well as coarse-scale maps that classified vegetation as only "shrub" in the case of ND and the Canadian provinces. This map is a 90-meter grid, but source material included 30 to 90-meter grids, and 1:24,000 and 1:100,000 polygon coverages. Purpose: This map was created to compile all existing GIS data layers of mapped sagebrush and shrubsteppe habitats, for the purpose of providing a coarse-scale perspective on the distribution of potential western sage-grouse habitat, for use in the Western Sage-grouse Conservation Assessment WAFWA report. NORTH DAKOTA From the NLCD coverage, we selected NLCD Code 51 to represent the distribution of shrubland in North Dakota. NLCD Code 51 is defined as areas dominated by shrubs; shrub canopy accounts for 25-100 percent of the cover. Shrub cover is generally greater than 25 percent when tree cover is less than 25 percent. Shrub cover may be less than 25 percent in cases when the cover of other life forms (e.g. herbaceous or tree) is less than 25 percent and shrubs cover exceeds the cover of the other life forms. SOUTH DAKOTA From the SD-GAP coverage, we selected landcover value 21 to represent the distribution of shrubland in South Dakota. This landcover value is described by SD-GAP as mesic shrubland, shrubs occurring in wet environments in western South Dakota. NEW MEXICO From the NM-GAP coverage, we selected landcover values 4211 and 4212 to represent the distribution of sagebrush and shrub-steppe habitats in New Mexico. NM-GAP code 4211 (Great Basin Microphyllous Desert Scrub) contains: Big Sage (Artemisia tridentata), Black Sage (Artemisia nova), and Bigelow Sage (Artemisia begelovii). NM-GAP code 4212 (Great Basin Broadleaf Deciduous Desert Scrub) contains: Fourwing Saltbush (Atriplex canescens), Shadscale (Atriplex confertifolia), Rubber Rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus nauseosus), and Winterfat (Ceratoides lanata). ARIZONA From the AZ-GAP coverage, we selected landcover values 7 and 43-45 (see descriptions below) to represent the distribution of sagebrush and shrub-steppe habitats in Arizona.
