The goal was to determine if there were genetic differences between sage-grouse from SW CO and those from NW CO. In Kahn et al.'s (1999) study, 141 base pairs were sequenced from 20 individuals from each of seven populations. Results showed that all the greater sage-grouse populations has many mtDNA haplotypes while the Gunnison population had only 2 haplotypes present. Oyler-McCance et al. (1999) expanded on Kahn et al.'s study by including data from four nuclear microsatellites and by adding 20 samples from Gunnison sage-grouse populations. Results were similar and showed that the greater sage-grouse showed more genetic diversity than the Gunnison sage-grouse and that there was much less gene flow between the two populations.
