This theme contains dynamic segmentation added, by the ICBEMP, to USGS river segments. This segmentation work was done to provide a dataset for use in spatially identifying stream habitat information.

Part 1 includes HUC numbers 17000000 thru 17039999 (northeastern Washington, northern Idaho, and northwestern Montana). The base layer used was the 1993 version of the U. S. Geological Survey Water Resource Division 1:100,000 streams digital line graph (DLG), obtained through the Environmental Protection Agency Seattle office. Ten tiles were replaced with updated tiles from the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), also obtained through the EPA Seattle office. Updates were completed by the WA Dept of Energy and the OR State Service Center for GIS, under contract with BPA. The updated tiles were: f17010308, f17020006, f17020007, f17020008, f17030001, f17030003, f17060106, f17060109, f17070106, and f17010216. Several modifications were made to the tiles, which included: renaming streams to eliminate duplicate names, naming unnamed streams (if they had associated stream survey data and were identifiable on a map), reprojecting the tiles to NW Albers, ARC flipping to represent stream flow direction correctly in order to assign Strahler order, route development (based on stream names), addition of Strahler order to the .aat and addition of HUCID to the streams.ratname INFO file (in order to link to stream survey data), and remeasuring major streams for streams crossing tiles (due to makeroute utility starting all streams within a tile at 0).

Base layer from 1993 version of USGS Water Resource Division 1:100,000 streams digital line graph.
The Boise Intermountain Research Station, Seattle EPA Office, and ICBEMP Aquatic team made several modifications to the USGS 100k stream layer. Listed below are the modifications in roughly the order they occurred.

Renaming of Streams: Streams were renamed so there were no duplicate stream names within a tile. Different streams with the same name were renamed to be unique. For example, if two Bear Creeks were found in one tile, they would be made unique by adding a "1" to the name or calling one stream "CR" and the other "CREEK".

Additional Naming of Streams: Stream names were given to unnamed streams (on the 100k layer) if they had stream survey data associated with it and were identifiable on a map. The AML "fix_epa.aml" written by Mike Radko was used to facilitate this process.

Reprojection of Tiles: All the tiles were reprojected to NW Albers using the AML "huc_prj.aml" written by Mike Radko.

Route Development: ARC routes were developed for all streams. Routes were based on stream names. Unnamed streams were lumped together under item Name_ID 1. Route development was accomplished using "makeroute6.aml" which was written by Bill Bogue.

Library Development: The Spatial team developed a library structure for the tiles called "sub". The library files are in maintained by the ICBEMP at /em22/aquat/boise/database. Cover "index_sub" is the 4th field HUCs within the CRB assessment area and indicates which tiles are incorporated into the library. Cover "index" is the 4th Field HUCs with stream survey data.

Arc Flipping: Arcs were flipped to ensure the cover represented stream flow direction correctly. This was necessary to ensure Strahler order was properly assigned. Arcs were flipped using the AML "fliparc.aml" written by Ken Tu (see attached). Only arcs that coincided with stream survey data were closely looked at and flipped if necessary due to time constraints. Other arcs were flipped on an "as noticed" basis.

Remeasuring of Major Streams: The makeroute utility started the measure of all streams within a tile at river mile 0. This created the need to remeasure major streams crossing more than one tile (4th field HUC). Major streams were remeasured manually in ARCEDIT with the remeasure command.

Addition of INFO File Items: Strahler order was added to the streams.aat INFO file and was populated using the AML "strahler.aml" written by K.J. Lanfear. This procedure was run out of the Seattle EPA office.

HUCID was added to be used as a linking field for the stream survey data. HUCID was created using the 4th field HUC and name_id generated from makeroute.

If unable to download data directly from the ICBEMP web site (www.icbemp.gov/spatial), follow these instructions for the manual ICBEMP data request process.
Complete and mail the Data Request Form and the Available Data List to ICBEMP, Attn: Carole Smith, c/o USDA Forest Service, 333 S.W. First Ave, 4th Floor, Portland, OR 97204 (Internet: c3smith@or.blm.gov). These forms are available from the Project web site or can be requested via e-mail from bgravenmier@fs.fed.us. Please specify requested datasets by placing a checkmark in the space provided on the Available Data List.

Spatial data are released in Unix ARC/INFO export format. ARCVIEW files are made available when applicable. The digital data are provided on 8mm tape unless otherwise specified. Please specify special instructions for export format and tape density on the request form.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Oregon State Office will telephone the requester to advise the cost of requested data. The requested data are mailed to the requester after payment has been received by the BLM.

Cost is based on a manual labor charge of $20.00 per hour (prorated), cost of the tape(s), and size of the map/plot(s). Digital data are provided on 8mm tape (cost $9.00) unless special instructions are specified on the request form. Federal offices are provided the information free of charge.

Technical Prerequisites:
Spatial data are released as both compressed Unix-based archive ARC(.TAR.Z) export files and PC-based executable (.EXE) files. Attribute files are released in dBASE IV (.DBF) format as Unix-based archive (.TAR.Z) files and PC-based (.EXE) files. Additionally, databases are released in both dBase IV and Paradox (.DB) format as .TAR.Z and .EXE files. All files within the archive .TAR.Z files and .EXE files follow the 8.3 naming convention to enable use on the Windows 3.1 operating system.
